Fermanagh teenager Josh Elliott pulled off the race of his life today at the Nurburgring in Germany. Riding in only his third race meeting aboard a Direct cctv Racedays Honda 600, the fifteen year old made it onto the podium in second place.
A superb 5th place in qualifying helped him to a good start, but he had to fight from 7th place early in the race through a star studded field of riders.
Some, including ex champion Sebastian Diss and ex world Supersport rider Christian Kellner had to give best to some clinical overtaking moves by the youngster.
Having charged through to 3rd after half distance, Elliott began to steadily reel in the 2nd placed rider Steven Michels. As the gap closed Michels slid off unharmed to leave the ‘rookie’ to bring his Honda home in 2nd place behind winner Sascha Hommel to an ecstatic team.
After champagne spraying celebrations on the podium and German press interviews, Josh had this to say about his day, “I can’t believe I got 2nd here".
To even get into the top ten would have been great. The team have worked really well to give me a great bike this weekend with new front suspension, and Dunlop supplied me really good tyres which lasted the whole race. It was tough but I really enjoyed it. I hope I can get another good race tomorrow.” Team Principal Gerry Bryce, “We expected great results from Josh but today was a surprise!
K-tech suspension, Dunlop tyres and Josh seems to be a working combination. He did a great job, and should be proud of himself.”
Rider coach Jeremy McWilliams still recovering from an ankle injury was at Nurburgring and had this to say, “We are absolutely delighted with Josh’s progress.
Our main sponsor Chris from Direct cctv.co.uk came here today to watch Josh and it just couldn’t have gone any better.
This weekend the biggest change came with Josh’s confidence on the new ‘K tech fork’, the Dunlop tyre and sheer determination.
Thanks to AB tuning and everyone in the team for all their hard work. Josh was outstanding. From early testing it was obvious that Josh is something special. We are all very proud of him today.”
